MYSTERY JAM MONDAY PART 132

After a week off, the Mystery Jam returnes, tanned, rested and ready to notch its eigth victory... in just 132 tries. Sigh. As usual we will be playing for an MP3 download, courtesy of our friends at LivePhish.com / Nugs.Net. The rules haven't changed: you need to correctly identify the song and the date to win. Post your guess in the comments. One guess per person per day (with the second “day” starting after I post the hint). A hint will be posted on Tuesday (if necessary) and the answer will be posted on Wednesday. Good luck...

Wednesday Answer: Congrats to NickSalv for being the first to get the 6/19/97 "Caspian." The Blog will be back on Monday with another Mystery Jam...

mcgrupp81 It's not that Jim though the ending is similar to the MJ. Only thing I can say is that I felt "small venue" when I first heard this. I'll guess 6/13/00 Caspian.

This is not the right answer. Nor is it the Copenhagen Jim > Caspian, but I forgot how beautiful that one was! This is a really tough one because there's not anything crazy distinguishing about it. Not quite on the level with putting any Bouncing on the MJM and having us scramble to figure it out, but tough nonetheless. Then again it could be a trap and it's not Caspian at all...

drucifer I can't get to my tunes, but I'd wager heavily on small arena, post 99 Caspian... Which of course means it's probably an 09 hood or something completely different.

andrewrose Does sound a bit like it could go into Piper at the end there. I guessed prematurely. Though with the scramble on Caspian and with an unifinished version in a European venue on 2/25 I thought it was a pretty good guess.. but Page just takes that one out Coil-style. Sounds a

That was the first one I went to to check. Would have been a nice touch almost ten years to the day, and a great Caspian taboot, complete with a little outro jam-> Frakenstein. But I'm pretty sure that ain't it either..

nothing 7-10-1997 has a distinctive loop running through most of the tune-- this MJM does not.

GottaJibboo No no no, you're way off.....clearly this is Frankenstein!

Joking aside, if its not Caspian it's a song that ends and bleeds into Caspian. Like Steep. This has only occurred twice, the first being the debut of Steep. Since I don't think they jammed Steep out the first time played, I'll guess the second fully knowing I'm 99% wrong:

Steep 12/12/97

This is the correct answer, confirmed. Nice work! I dropped the ball again and got too worried the answer would be found too quickly. Oh well... I have my strategies optimized now at least.

NickSalv ive been listening to 1997 all the way through for the first time. oddly enough, I started with the Fall (bad move?) and im going backwards... just finished both summer tours about a week ago, got lucky with that one! theres some real gems in those Europe shows, very beautiful moments interspersed with some very dark jams

Damn straight on the Summer Europe 97 shows. Real intimate feel that comes through on the tapes. The 6/20 show that follows the show featuring this Caspian is such a great listen. The 1st set is probably one of my all time favorite 1st sets.

I've only done about a third of Summer '97, I should get on it soon. In 2012 I listened to Fall '97 > New Year's Run '97 > Island Tour > Europe '98 > US Summer '98 and I haven't heard a better stretch of music by a band ever. I'm debating between doing Summer '97 or continuing on to Winter '98 next. I also need to get more into '99, but instead of continuing my listening journey I just keep going back to Fall '97 and the Island Tour. I have a playlist that has all these shows in order that I've listened to like six times in the last six months:

11/17/97, 11/21/97, 11/22/97, 11/23/97, 11/28/97, 11/29/97 (just the Runaway Jim), 12/6/97, 12/7/97, 12/11/97, 12/29/97, 12/30/97, 4/2/98, 4/3/98, 4/4/98, 4/5/98.

All SBD recordings, all epic. Anyone who hasn't heard every one of these shows should download them immediately.

NickSalv Thanks .net! This MJM led me right back to that tour, just re-listened to the first 4 shows. If you haven't done so, definitely check out this show (and the entire Euro tour if you have the time). It truly was an experimental trip for the band; you can hear the sounds of the Great Went/Fall 97 just brewing there on stage.

Also, if you haven't been following LawnMemo's Daily Ghost adventure, go to his site NOW (he's almost done!). The Ghost from this show (Daily Ghost #3) is available for download. The MP3 begins with this incredible funk section at the end of Stash that segues smoothly into Ghost, which is quite "trippy" to say the least. Incredibly tight yet loose playing going on there (if that's possible).

Still, I have to say, GET THE WHOLE SHOW/TOUR. It's a nice precursor to the magic that would follow.
